NEMA Takes Flood Awareness Campaign To Oyo
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has taken its flood awareness campaign to Oluyole Local Government Area of Oyo State to prepare residents ahead of the rainy season and guard against flood cases.
In the area, Agara community has recorded the worst hit in flood disaster in the past, something that prompted NEMA to take the house to house campaign on safety practices to the community.
The Coordinator South-west NEMA, who was represented by Mr Abimbola Akinkoye, told reporters that the step became necessary because the community had always suffered major hits and that a change in attitude could go a long way to safeguard lives and property.
He also revealed that an impact assessment would be carried out on some areas already affected by rainstorm in the state.
Volunteers and officials of the agency went from one household to another warning on the dangers of indiscriminate refuse dumping, blocking of drainage and other unwholesome practices.
As the 2015 rainy season begins, residents who live in areas such as Agara community do so with fear not sure what the rains will bring with it, as the community was founded on a flood plain.
Some of the residents requested that the government should make their community’s environment safer.
Meanwhile, residents of some areas already affected by rainstorm made passionate appeals to the government and NEMA for assistance.
Mr Akinkoye promised the residents of the affected areas that the agency would consider their request and respond appropriately.
NEMA is also sensitising other communities that are prone to flood disaster within the state.
