NNPC Restructuring, PENGASSAN, NUPENG Suspend Strike.
The Group Executive Committees (GECs) of
the two labour unions in the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation
(NNPC) have suspended their industrial action against the federal
government’s recent announcement of its restructuring of the state oil
company.
Authoritative sources disclosed early this morning in Abuja that both the National Union of
Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural
Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) had after a
marathon meeting with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources and
Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, decided on the
suspension.
It was gathered that the meeting which lasted several hours ended this morning at 4:30am, had the parties agreeing to a broader engagement in the restructuring exercise.
According to the source, a resolution
which would later be announced by the parties was reached and signed
after extensive deliberations.
The unions had on Wednesday
kicked against the announcement by Kachikwu of the final outcome of
NNPC’s restructuring by the government, saying they were not carried
along in the entire process.
They in this regard asked their members
across the country to down tool in their respective operations pending
when a favourable resolution would be reached with the government.
More to follow.
