Gunmen killing villagers in Nigeria.

Gunmen have killed 10 people in attacks on two Christian-dominated villages in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna, a hotbed of ethnic and religious strife, officials said Tuesday.

On Christmas Eve, six people were killed when gunmen suspected to be ethnic Fulani community stormed Ungwan Mailafiya, they said.

The killings followed an attack in nearby Nindem late Friday where gunmen opened fire on a congregation, killing four and injuring 10, said a local lawmaker.

"While we were mourning the deaths at Nindem ... the security personnel received distress calls of another attack at Ungwan Mailafiya", parliamentarian Shehu Nicholas Garba said in a statement.

"By daybreak on Christmas, six persons had been confirmed killed, including a child of about six years old, and many others injured," he said.

A spokesman from the state government said troops had been deployed to prevent further violence.

Southern Kaduna has for three decades been locked in tit-for-tat killings between indigenous Christian farming communities and Hausa and Fulani settlers.

The dispute was originally over land and grazing rights but has lately degenerated into ethnic and religious conflicts, leaving hundreds dead.

The Kaduna State government says it is saddened by the latest attack on Unguwan Mailafiya community which led to death of four people and about eight others injured.

Mr Samuel Aruwan, the Senior Special Assistant to the state governor on Media and Publicity made the remark while briefing newsmen in Kaduna on Monday.

He said the Military Authorities notified the State Government of the attack on the community which  occurred late last night Sunday Dec. 24, following an attack at Nimdem on the Saturday night Dec. 23

According to Aruwan,  “The state government has been working with security agencies to fortify the general area and enhance security in the area.

He reassured citizens of their safety, saying the Commander of Operation ‘Safe Haven’, has temporarily moved to Kafanchan to coordinate the operation,
“Negative elements must not be allowed to undo all the hard work done to restore peace and security, adding that, government commiserates with the victims and their families”.

“All our communities are enjoined to stand together, and support the security agencies to thwart what looks like a predetermined plot to create anarchy around this period, which has failed.

”We, therefore, enjoin all citizens to put hands together to deny criminals the opportunity of succeeding in their evil plans”.

Aruwan further urged people in the area to report any threat to peace, law and order within the Kaduna South Senatorial district to the officials of Operation Safe Haven, the special security task force in the area on the following mobile phone numbers for necessary action.
