Berlin's new airport is a contender for the world's most useless.

Germany’s reputation for precision and punctuality is taking a battering thanks to the ongoing saga of its capital’s sparkling new airport.

The grand opening of Berlin’s Brandenburg Airport (BER) was recently delayed by two more years - until October 2020 - while the German newspaper Bild last week claimed that another €1billion (£882million) will be needed to complete the project.

The cost

The much-maligned airport was originally meant to cost €2.83billion, according to a 2006 estimate. But by late 2012, €4.3billion had already been spent.

Berlin's new airport is nine years late and €5bn (£4.41bn) over budget
