Nigeria: Jettison 2019 Ambition OBJ tells Buhari
Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to seek re-election in 2019.
Obasanjo, in a special press statement, “The Way Out: A Clarion Call for Coalition for Nigerian Movement”, released on Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, said Buhari has performed far below expectations and should honourably “dismount from the horse” to join the league of the country’s former leaders whose “experience, influence, wisdom and outreach can be deployed on the sideline for the good of the country.”
The former President said he feels disappointed with Buhari’s performance, whom he supported during the 2015 election over the, then incumbent and candidate of his former party, Goodluck Jonathan.
Recalling an open letter he wrote sometime in December 2013 titled, “Before it is Too Late” where he highlighted the numerous failures of the Jonathan administration, Obasanjo noted that his decision to go against Mr Jonathan, was borne out of the realities on ground at that time, and as such the events in the last three years of Buhari of poor performance have since proved, hence the advice for him to jettison his re-election bid was for the good of the nation and nothing personal.
